Creating and editing Datasets
From CKAN
Contents |
Names
The 'name' or 'url' field is a unique identity for the dataset reflecting the name of the content/purpose of the data or the project to collect it. Examples: river-quality-europe bolivia-government-spending.
In general we prefer to avoid acronyms but if these are widely used they can be utilized.
Renaming
Changing the name is possible but discouraged.
Title
Use a short descriptive title for the dataset.
URL
This is usually the URL for the dataset project home page not the data itself.
Resources
Resources are where you enter details and locations of the material itself. See Domain Model/Resource page for more.
Tagging
See the FAQ on Tag Conventions
Some standard tags:
- country-{2-digit-iso-code} e.g. country-uk
- size-{size-spec} e.g. size-xlarge size-small size-gb
NB: these two examples should probably become tag families e.g. country.uk and size.xlarge
Author and Maintainer
These fields contain the name and contact email addresses for one or two people who are associated with the data.
The first contact person should be put in the 'author' field. If there is a second contact person then put them in the 'maintainer' field.
These fields were named 'author' and 'maintainer' following the convention set by Debian packaging, to provide some way of giving feedback and credit. But CKAN users recognise that the contact points for data is often not the same as the author or maintainer, so the fields have been co-opted as 1st and 2nd contact points.
(The person associated with the metadata is not named here - he/she is recorded in the revision log if logged in.)
